Creative Missions 2015 Boise, ID
Yet again I seemed to have stumbled into the secret world of Church Communicators and Creatives. Initially thought to be a myth (we are still looking for proof of Bigfoot and unicorns), it appears that there are people that actually make a living doing this stuff for churches. If you’re like me, you say “How hard could it be?”, just throw some clipart into Microsoft Publisher and choose the Papyrus font for everything. Done and done! Well it appears that, like kittens, coffee, and Star Wars, the fine folks in the recruitment department for Creative Missions couldn’t get enough of me last year in Baltimore and have once again invited me to serve on the annual Creative Missions trip from an applicant pool of what must have been at least 29 other people. Maybe this year they’ll teach me the secret handshake.
“Creative Missions has answered our prayers with pixels.” – Tally Wilgis, Captivate Church
So what’s the deal?
We function similarly to other mission trips, but instead of constructions projects, outreach events, and VBS, our mission teams of 30 creative missionaries spread among 5 teams will be serving a total of 10-15 Boise area churches and even one church in Ontario, Oregon (Yay, I might be going to Canada! jk). During that time, teams will produce videos, websites, social media strategies, logos, print projects, signage, tech setups, and much more.
Boise is a growing town (#15 on Forbes’ list of the fastest growing U.S. cities) with a lively outdoors culture, healthy economy, and a fantastic quality-of-life. In fact, the quality of life is so good, folks don’t realize their need for a savior.
It’s also a “post-Christian” city that’s open to a plurality of spiritual beliefs, but largely unchurched. The church is actually the biggest barrier to the gospel in Boise. People are not asking, “what church should we go to,” but “why church?” We’re serving churches who have found impacting their city with the gospel best happens in missional communities.
Our goal in 2015 is to help equip pastors and their missional communities engage a culture where some find little value in a traditional “church service.” For me personally, it means I’ll be using my creative talents in photography, web design, and whatever else is needed by the churches my team will be serving for the week.
“We are so excited! Love the heart of #creativemissions and we can’t wait to meet your team when you descend on Boise!” // from Discovery Church in Boise
Mission: Pairing media professionals with under-resourced churches, creating sustainable solutions that engage their communities with the gospel.
“Being a disciple means being sent; so sending should pervade every aspect of what a church does. We don’t need to relegate missions to a specific “department” of our churches; we need sending to be the ethos of our churches.” – J.D. Greear
